Why we check your photo first
Visa portals often reject photos for small, avoidable reasons. We run a check before you pay so you can retake the photo, or decide with the facts in front of you.
The check is guidance, not a guarantee. It can miss things or get things wrong, and final acceptance is always decided by the issuing authority.
What the check looks at
- Face: a face is found, and only one face is in the photo.
- Size and proportions: the photo is large enough and the framing matches the destination's rules.
- Sharpness, exposure and lighting: the image is in focus, not too dark or bright, and evenly lit.
- Face position: your face is turned towards the camera, with both eyes open and visible.
- Glasses: whether you wear glasses or sunglasses, and whether there is glare on the lenses or frames covering your eyes.
- Headwear: hats and non-religious head coverings, and religious head coverings (which are generally allowed if your full face is visible from chin to forehead, with no shadows on the face).
- Expression: a neutral expression with the mouth closed.
- A direct photo: the picture is a direct photo of you, not a photo of a screen or a print, and has not been heavily filtered or retouched.
The rules differ from country to country, so the same photo can pass for one destination and get a warning for another.
What is checked, by destination
Here is how the main items are treated for each of the eight destinations. "Pass" means no problem, "Warn" means a warning with a confirmation box, "Block" means you must retake before paying, and "Allow" means the item is accepted.
| Check | Vietnam | US | UK | Canada | India | China | Japan | Saudi |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Face position (forward, eyes open) | Block | Block | Block | Block | Block | Block | Block | Block |
| Sunglasses or tinted lenses | Block | Block | Block | Block | Block | Block | Block | Block |
| Clear glasses | Warn | Warn | Warn | Allow | Warn | Allow | Warn | Allow |
| Glare on lenses | Block | Block | Warn | Warn | Block | Warn | Warn | Warn |
| Frames covering eyes | Block | Block | Warn | Warn | Block | Warn | Warn | Warn |
| Hats and non-religious headwear | Warn | Block | Block | Block | Warn | Block | Warn | Block |
| Religious head covering | Allow | Allow | Allow | Allow | Allow | Allow | Allow | Allow |

| Filter or heavy retouching | Warn | Warn | Warn | Warn | Warn | Warn | Warn | Warn |
| Photo of a screen or print | Block | Block | Block | Block | Block | Block | Block | Block |
Religious head coverings are allowed everywhere as long as your full face is visible from chin to forehead, with no shadows on the face.
What the results mean
- Pass: no problem found for this destination.
- Warning: something may cause the portal to reject your photo. You can retake the photo, or tick a box confirming you understand the risk and continue.
- Blocked: a problem the destination does not accept. You will need to retake the photo before paying.
Why photos get flagged, and how to fix it
- Glasses glare - retake without glasses, or angle the light so it does not reflect on the lenses.
- Frames covering your eyes - use smaller frames, or remove your glasses for the photo.
- Shadows on one side of your face - face a window or soft light, and move so the light is even.
- A smile or open mouth - keep a neutral expression with your mouth closed.
- Head tilted or turned - face the camera straight on, head level.
- Background clutter - stand in front of a plain, light wall.
- A photo of a screen or a print - take a fresh photo of yourself, not a photo of a photo.
- Heavy filter or retouching - use the original, unedited photo.
When the AI check is unavailable
Part of the check is done by an AI service from Google (Gemini). If that service is unavailable, we tell you on the results screen, and the checks that depend on it (such as glasses and headwear) are not applied. Double-check your photo before paying.
See our Privacy Policy for how your photo is handled.
Warnings and the guarantee
A warning you confirmed before payment falls outside our guarantee for that item. For example, if you confirm a glasses warning and the portal rejects the photo because of the glasses, that item is not covered. You can still use the free redo. See our article on the guarantee for the details.
Frequently asked questions
Why did my photo get a warning?
The check found something that may cause this destination's portal to reject it. The message tells you what and why.
Can I ignore a warning?
Yes, for warnings (not blocks), once you tick the confirmation. It is safer to retake the photo.
What is the difference between a warning and a block?
A warning lets you continue after you confirm you understand the risk. A block stops you until you retake the photo.
Are religious head coverings allowed?
Generally yes, if your full face is visible from chin to forehead with no shadows on the face. We show a short note when we detect one.
Can the same photo pass for one country and fail another?
Yes. The rules differ by destination, so the same photo can get different results for different countries.
Do you keep my photo after the check?
See our article on what happens to your photo, and the Privacy Policy.
Does the check guarantee acceptance?
No. Final acceptance always rests with the issuing authority.
What should I do if I cannot retake the photo?
You can confirm the warning and continue, but keep in mind that a rejection caused by that warned item is outside the guarantee for that item.
Final acceptance always rests with the issuing authority. See the Privacy Policy and Biometric notice for how your photo is handled.
